08_SUSTAINABILITY: ECOLOGICAL HOSPITALS
Sustainability and environmental respect must be one of the premises of future constructions. Constructions must search a minimal environmental impact and the use for appropriate technologies in order to reduce energy consumptives and construct in harmony with its environment. Other aspects to be taken into account are the constructive system used, the shape, building orientation, natural light, natural ventilation.
Energetic efficient and sustainability are a constant worry because they have a very light energetic consumption.
The concept of sustainability is commonly applied to the capacity of not abusing of natural resources that today’s society must acquire in order to not jeopardize their future.
There are several definitions of sustainability but the most accepted referent to efficiency and respect for the environment.
The main objectives we try to achieve on own constructions refer to:
- Reduce the demand of energy.
- Use of natural resource and energy.
- Healthy environment and environmental protection.
- High efficiency equipment
- Control programs of energy saving.
- Patients and users welfare.
- Waste reduction policy (in 2025 hospitals will generate 0 wastes).
The Reduction of energy consumption is a primary goal that begins with a sustainable design which into account architectural.
- Orientation of the building.
- The shape factor.
- The Use of environmentally friendly materials.
- The Integration of sunlight.
- Ventilated Façades.
- Use of sun protecting systems in the windows.
- Reusing of rain water.
Another goal of the project, together with environmental protection, would be avoiding pollution and the eventual maintenance of the refrigeration towers, especially those related with the bacterium Legionella. It is very important to avoid this risk in healthcare environments, as patients have their defenses lowered.
